UNIVERSITY BOOK CENTER UP FOR GRABS, STUDENTS DEMAND NON PROFIT OPERATION
College Park Students for a democratic Society Announce Campaign for Non Profit University Book Center

28 Jan 2009 – College Park, MD: The deadline for companies to bid on the contract to operate the University Book Center (UBC) ends today as College Park Students for a democratic Society (CP-SdS) pushes Stamp administrators to make the process of selecting a new contractor transparent and switch to a non-profit model. The Stamp has begun a decision making process without notifying the student body at large or soliciting substantial student input. From conversations with Stamp administrators, CP-SdS has learned that only one student will be on the committee that evaluates the bids for the next five year contract to operate the UBC.
Stamp administrators have yet to respond to a student request for a public forum on the contract process.
A non-profit bookstore run by the University would enable greater student control over inventory, labor practices, and cost saving programs. CP-SdS is encouraging students to write to Stamp administrators Gretchen Metzelaars (gmetzela@umd.edu) and Steve Gnadt (sgnadt@umd.edu) to express their concerns with the UBC and the current contracting process. In addition, concerned students should join CP-SdS’s facebook group “Books for Students, Not for Profit.” and visit our website (cpsds.org).
CP-SdS member Bob Hayes, in a letter released today, called on the Stamp administrators to hold a public forum about the new bookstore contract. He said, referring to the University Book Center, that “as a service that is an integral part of every student’s education, we deserve to know what changes are coming and a voice at the table in coming to those decisions.”
Jon Berger, member of CP-SdS, said, “If we allow the administration to make decisions about essential student services in secret, we risk the disenfranchisement and misrepresentation of student interests. The only way to ensure decisions are representative of student needs is to substantially involve students in the decision-making process, anything less is unacceptable.”
CP-SdS members and allies are tabling in the Stamp this week to build student support for this initiative.

STUDENTS RALLY AND DIE-IN AT BANK OF AMERICA TO PROTEST COAL FINANCE

14 NOV, COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND – Students, youth, and community members will stage a rally and die-in at the Bank of America in College Park as part of the National Day of Action against Coal and Coal Finance. Students for a Sustainable Future in College Park, Maryland, in coordination with the Rainforest Action Network and over 50 groups across the country demand that Citi and Bank of America stop funding coal and starting funding the future. The demonstrations are part of a long-term nationwide campaign to pressure major banks to end their investments in the coal industry.
Who: Students for a Sustainable Future
What: Rally and deliver letters demanding that Bank of America stop its investments in mountain-top removal coal mining and construction of new coal-fired power plants. If Bank of America does not agree to end its destructive and immoral investment practices, the group will die-in at the bank, symbolizing the harm the coal industry does to communities and the environment.
When: 2pm, Friday, Nov. 14
Where: The corner of College Ave. and US Route 1
Why: Currently Bank of America, along with Citi are financing the construction of more 150 new coal-fired power plants. Bank of America invests less than 0.2% of its $1.5 trillion in assets in alternative energy. In fact, Bank of America has provided more than $6 billion in funding for coalmining companies since 2000, including companies that perform mountain top removal. By funding the production of 600 million to more than 1 billion tons of new CO2 admissions each year and by funding the destruction of already impoverished communities in Appalachia, Bank of America is financing the death of the planet. If Bank of America were to direct its investments towards sustainable technology it could create good, new jobs, eliminate our dependence on oil, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Students for a Sustainable Future is a coalition of students and student groups from the University of Maryland. Students for a Democratic Society and Clean Energy for UMD have endorsed the event.
